The Gold Kahuna is one of the awards given by the Honolulu International Film Festival in various categories—fewer than 10 percent of submissions were selected for this prestigious award. The KoAloha Ukulele Story was among the very best of the several hundreds of films submitted from over 30 countries around the world. The ukulele maker himself, Alvin Okami, will perform immediately after the screening with Herb Ohta, Jr., vanguard for the new generation of 'ukulele players. Okami will also"talk story" and showcase the miniature ukulele that gave birth to KoAloha as well as ukuleles from his master piece collection that made it one of the most innovative ukulele companies today. The KoAloha Ukulele Story is not an ordinary story. And Alvin Okami is not an ordinary ukulele maker. He has been called by many a modern day "Renaissance Man." He is an inventor, an innovator, a composer/arranger, a singer, an accomplished oboist, an industrial designer, graphic designer, and overall brilliant conceptual and spontaneous idea man. In the animated documentary short film, The KoAloha Ukulele Story, Alvin becomes storyteller as he "talks story" sharing the journey from his days running a bankrupt plastics company to the day he decided to make the first miniature playable ukulele. The KoAloha Ukulele Story is the brain child of director and producer Gary San Angel and animator Rocky Kev, both based in Philadelphia. The yearlong project was almost never completed; the film first began as a traditional documentary film but much of San Angel's interview footage was lost. With the help of Rocky Kev and a backup audio recording of Okami's interview, the two filmmakers created an animated version of the story and had its world premiere screening at the 1st Annual Philadelphia Asian American Film Festival this past October 2008 to rave reviews.
